Who becomes a Coin Collector?
By Kim Sevine
Many people become interested in becoming a coin collector for various reasons each year. For most people it remains as a fun hobby with no direct goal to acquire absolute complete collections on the high end of the scale. Anyone can find a type of theme which will appeal to their own specific interests. These may include coins from a particular year or era, country or origin, or even special limited proof editions. Other people become quite serious about coin collecting and it becomes much more than just a passive hobby.
Often those who started collecting coins say, twenty years ago or so, find that their collections have actually become a very valuable asset as the values of either the coins themselves or the materials they were made from have increased dramatically in value over the years. This has often held true for materials such as gold and silver. So for the coin collector there is the value and investment strategy side of things, and then there is the side which is purely fun and interesting. Your favorite one may just become highly valuable one day, and then if you need the money you will have a very liquid asset because there is never a shortage of people interested in buying tangible assets such as these.
Part of the mystique is the detail that so many coins possess. From the overall design to the actual strike, all of them are like beautiful works of art. The history behind the coins themselves is also a great interest and never fails to tweak one’s imagination as far as the mysterious side of things goes. Some people spend a great deal of money on their collections; they are very particular about quality as well. Others may spend very little on them and just keep an eye out for interesting coins to come along in their every day lives. This still allows for all the benefits of owning such pieces, and still lends itself to the appreciation of their beauty.
Being a coin collector can be a tremendously enjoyable hobby for so many people, and it is very easy to get started too. When people have a particular interest in a certain time period, they often collect a vast array of items from the period and this can easily include coins. There are so many different time periods and geographical themes to choose from and that have been created over so many years. Even the materials can be part of a theme such as gold or silver. And many of these can be bought for relatively small amounts of money.
If you are a history buff you may actually make for a great coin collector as you already have an appreciation and a familiarity of the times you are interested in, and as a coin collector this provides ample opportunity to actually use your knowledge in something that you enjoy. Some collectors are quite active and others are relatively passive in the hobby. No matter what your status is as a coin collector, you likely find that you enjoy attending shows and frequenting coin shops. This is not only a fun way to pass the time, but you really do never know what kind of treasures are waiting just around the corner.
